Sao Tome and Principe traditional rhythms are the Ússua and the Socopé. On the Prince island, the most common sound is the Dêxa, but there are many other type of musics from this country, like the Danço Congo or the Tchiloli dance/ceremony. These altogether constitute a relevant part of the country's very own identity and history.
Tchiloli refers to the XVI century impromptu "A Tragédia do marquês de Mântua e do Príncipe D. Carlos Magno" and is similar to the "São Lourenço", which is performed on Saint Lawrence's day, both acts being of French origin. Tchicoil is performed by prominent islanders while dressed in Renaissance clothing ressembling thoso of the European settlers, creating this unique and very extravagant form of entertainment.
